Rugby
From the origins at Rugby school in 1823 were there lies a commerative stone claiming that 16-year-old student William Webb Ellis, "with a fine disregard for the rules of football...first took the ball in his arms and ran with it, thus originating the distinctive feature of the rugby game", to the formation of the Rugby Football Union in 1871, the split in 1922 that brought about Rugby League through to the first world cup in 1987 and the start of the professional era in 1995. Rugby like cricket is reaching the height of its popularity across both the Northern and Summer Hemispheres.
